Don’t Believe the Hype: LA Asian Americans in Hip Hop brings together fifteen of the most historic and important Asian American individuals and groups in the hip hop movement in Los Angeles. The museum’s galleries will be filled by site-specific murals as immersive environments by famed hip hop graffiti and mural artists including DEFER, Gajin Fujita, Swank One, Shark Toof, Nisha Sethi, and Erin Yoshi. The exhibition also features an audio/video installation by rapper Jason Chu, historic ephemera from Firecracker music series organizers Daryl Chou and Alfred Hawkins, and the Beat Junkies Institute of Sound. Visual artists DEFER and Gajin Fujita will produce a site-specific collaboration on canvas, displayed alongside photographs from the local underground hip hop scene by Farah Sosa. Video and excerpts from poetry writing workshops done with incarcerated youth will be on display from educator and rapper Mandeep Sethi (aka SETI X). The exhibition will also include new artworks from Hueman, Kenny Kong, and Culture Shock.
This exhibition is co-curated by Ninochka McTaggart, PhD, and the Chinese American Museum’s newly appointed curator Justin Charles Hoover.
