Well, it’s that time again, when all of the ugly heads come out to join David Horvath and fans in the tribute event we call UglyCon (June 26th – July 9th) at Giant Robot. Curated by Eric Nakamura. Celebrating 10 years of Ice Bat with wall to wall Uglydoll art of all kinds, from artists and fans, mainly in the true plush Ice Bat form. My contribution is a felt piece I made titled “Dropping Ice on the 1’s & 2’s”, based on a drawing that David drew for me.  Today’s opening day activities (12 – 8pm) included a slide show narrated by David, signing, button making, raffle, cookie creating, bingo, shrinky dinks and scavenger hunt. The location buttons were in effect this year again with the added goodies of  signed mini-prints and magnets. Cool items to pick up are the Uglydoll laser etched skateboard deck and the UglyCon bag which includes a black plush Ice Bat plush and random color cape made by Enkyskulls. Charlton of Caliwood, brought down his wooden laser etched Ice Bat Pop pins as giveaways with the password “I’m Batty for Ice Pops”. Katherine, dressed in cosplay again with an awesome Bossy Bear outfit, so cool. A Makerbot was brought in to demo and make Uglydoll figures right in front of your eyes. Highlight of the day was a marriage proposal planned into the end of the bingo game with Jaycee showering the couple with white confetti, congratulations to Nick and Kim. BTW, the game prizes were off the hook with Uglydoll drawings and enormous framed pictures, to name a few. Eric’s mom was the nicest and brought in a whole table full of food and drinks. It was a super fun ugly day and so great to see everyone. Thanks to Eric Nakamura and David Horvath for including me in this awesome exhibit again. See you at the next UglyCon.
Peace!

Uglydoll is one of the greatest stories of an indie project gone global. Their history begins at Giant Robot in 2002 when co-creator David Horvath walked in with a single handmade Uglydoll sewn by his wife Sun-min Kim. Since then, Uglydoll is now a world wide brand and Uglycon is their tribute to their fans.  Following the success and fun of Uglycon 2013 at Giant Robot and GR2, Uglycon 2014 will be an all day event from 12 noon – 8pm with different events throughout the day.  Giant Robot 2 (GR2) will feature artwork in a variety of mediums from 2d, to custom plush, to custom vinyl figures from artists around the world. Last year featured different games, prizes, and also tied in the neighborhood with premiums offered at other local businesses in the Sawtelle area. 2014 will do more of the same, but expanded! We’re working out the details, but look for an array of new merchandise and hopefully great surprises.
