2014 is the Year of the Horse and I’m visiting White Tiger Schools this afternoon to join students, families and friends in the celebration on bringing in the Lunar New Year. To start the festivities, the students performed the traditional Chinese Dragon dance outside the studio to scare away evil spirits to the beat of the drum and the rhythm of gong and cymbals. In China, Dragons are linked to good luck, long life and wisdom. This dance was accompany by the lighting of firecrackers and the throwing of the lettuce to spread prosperity, what an exciting and festive performance by everyone. After the dance performance, it was time for the potluck lunch. There was so much food from all parts of the world to feast on, including deserts, yum. Sebastian, a student of White Tiger and owner of Touch Vinyl, provided the DJ music along with other guest DJs playing though out the day. Now that everyone had enough to eat and got to meet and chat with one another, it was time for the White Tiger Kung Fu (Bak Fu Pai) demonstrations. Students of all ages performed techniques from all levels, some solo and others in groups, a father and son also showed their skills together. Some of the advance students put on a show of their hard and dedicated training in breaking concrete blocks, coconuts by the Iron Palm and wooden staffs. Raffle tickets were sold all day and it was time to see who the lucky winners were. It was great to hear that all of the prizes were donated and I think everyone was happy with what they won. To end the event, gifts of candies, goodies and new year charms were given out to everyone as thank you gifts. As always, I had a super time at White Tiger with all the friendly staff, students, families and friends. A Happy New Year to everyone.
