"Dream Pop Universelle," the CD cover logo states. Dream pop, shoegaze, or whatever you want to call it, Asobi Seksu`s eponymous debut (reissued this year with new artwork after a sold out pressing a couple years ago) can be summarized as simply pop, though probably not in the most modern sense of the word. Singer Yuki sweetly sings most of the songs, a few in Japanese, where she almost sounds like a different person as she sings the English tracks perfectly. "I`m Happy But You Don`t Like Me" opens the album like a sweet J-pop track, until they plug in their effects pedals and the guitars segue into a dream pop fog. "Walk On The Moon" is an epic tour-de-force, it seems to glide into your head and lift you with it. It`s hard not to namedrop, but for the sake of having a point of reference, fans of Cocteau Twins, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine would probably adore this disc. The album hits a couple minor bumps throughout its course, but it`s otherwise beautiful stuff.More info: AsobiSeksu.com login to post comments
