Motor City Badass Again

Ford/GM/Chrysler
It's about time. After years of getting their collective asses handed to them by the Europeans and the Japanese, Detroit has finally produced a few cars that Americans can actually be proud to drive. Here are the best new consumer cars for 2005 from the "Big Three."

FORD MUSTANG GT The latest generation of Mustangs feature a deliberate retro-modern look, sporting many of the design lines from the original '60s classics. The GT version packs a lot of heat in its 300hp V-8 engine and new 5-speed stick shift. The coupe is available now, with the much-anticipated convertible version to follow. The price tag runs in the $25,000 range.

PONTIAC G6 GT Aimed directly at the Audi and the Acura sports sedans comes Pontiac's all-new G6, already famous for being given away to every audience member at Oprah's season opener. The G6's design is simple and clean, yet strikingly contemporary. Powered by a 3.5L 200-hp V-6, the G6 features a unique (and optional) three-panel panoramic sunroof (translation: it's huge). Prices start at around $24,000 for the GT flavor.

CHRYSLER 300C Last, but not least, comes Chrysler's badass 300C sedan. Its bold styling has a retro vibe going on, though it's certainly very today: the aggressive front design flows right into the bulky body with a lowered roofline--a definite bling-bling boulevard luxury cruiser. Packing plenty of punch is the 5.7L 340hp HEMI engine--the heart of the top-of-the-line 300C. For around $33,500, you can have one too.
